Smithpeters, Payne, Walker, Green Win Postseason Honors for Volunteers

CARTERVILLE – Four members of the John A. Logan College men’s basketball team – Head Coach Kyle Smithpeters, freshman guards Martavian Payne and Tre Green, and sophomore guard Darien Walker – have been recognized with awards for their success on the hardwood this past season.Smithpeters, who just completed his second season as head coach, was named Great Rivers Athletic Conference “Coach of the Year” along with Cedric Brown of Lake Land College. Both the Lakers and Vols finished tied for first at 11-5 in the league. The Vols were 20-11 overall.
Payne was selected “Freshman of the Year” in the GRAC. Brook Pampe of Olney Central won the Sportsmanship Award and Harold McBride Jr. of Lake Land was named GRAC “Player of the Year.”Named First Team All-Conference were: John Brown (Olney); Dennis Hightower (Lincoln Trail); Jeril Taylor (Rend Lake); Jaquail Townser (Southwestern Illinois); Jermain Ruttley (Kaskaskia); Joshua Caldwell and Jared Drew (Lake Land); Jaylen Carter (Southeastern Illinois); and Tre Green and Darien Walker (JALC). Picked Second Team All-GRAC were: D’Marnier Cunningham and Kevin Swanson (Kaskaskia); Tyrone Sherman (Wabash Valley); Cortez Macklin (Rend Lake); Jake Newton and Nick Painter (Lincoln Trail); and Brandon Book (Southwestern Illinois).
Vols named to the All-Region 24 Team were Payne and Walker. Lake Land’s McBride was selected Region 24 “Player of the Year.”
