March JALC Board Meeting Highlighted by Session with Student Senate

CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College Board of Trustees opened their regularly scheduled March meeting with an interactive session with the college’s Student Senate. During the session, Student Senate officers reported on the group’s activities in recent months that included a Thanksgiving food drive and participation in the Angel Tree project. Students raised over $5,000 and helped more than 300 local children through the Angel Tree project.
According to advisor Adrienne Barkley Giffin, the Thanksgiving food drive was especially meaningful because a student that had received one of the Thanksgiving donations also won a tuition waiver. In closing, members announced that the Student Senate had donated $50 to the American Association for Women in Community Colleges in honor of retiring Vice President for Instructional Services Dr. Deborah Payne and $50 to the Administrative Services Scholarship in honor of retiring Vice President for Administration Dr. Tim Daugherty.
In other board news, Dr. Payne reported that the College continues to strengthen partnerships with in-district schools. Payne cited the recent the success of the 10th annual Closing the Gap Conference that was attended by over 300 local teachers and administrators, as well as recent efforts to partner with the Carterville school district to have John A. Logan College students work with Carterville students after school.
President Mike Dreith reported that the recent wave of retirements at the college and around the state will continue as the state budget crisis grows. Dreith said sources in Springfield are predicting that Governor Quinn could announce a significant decrease in higher education funding at his annual budget address Wednesday, which could account for roughly a $1.5 million or more decrease to the college. He said that the decreased funding will require the college to develop a new sustainability plan.
Under the consent agenda, the board waived all related notification requirements, as stated in board policies, through May 31 of this year in regard to the pension reform law.
This move by the board allows non-teaching professionals and non-union operational employees to receive whatever retirement benefits for which they would be otherwise eligible.
In addition, the board approved the same measure for any collective bargaining agreement if recommended by the administration and approved by the collective bargaining association (CBA).
The following consent agenda items were also approved: approval of the results indicating that Kayla Malone was elected student trustee and a title change from the Vice President for Administration to Vice President for Student Affairs and Community Education.
In old business the Board Policy #3373, weapons and firearms was approved.
