CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College women’s basketball team sprinted to a double-digit lead early Saturday and never wavered in defeating Rend Lake, 87-75, in a Great Rivers Athletic Conference match.
With the win, the Vols improve to 7-8 in the conference and 14-11 overall.
Freshman guard Aneta Sloma enjoyed her best game as a collegian, totaling 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, including 6-of-11 from long range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. She was joined in double figures by Autumn Miller (17), Jessica Hirsch (16) and BreAnn Denny (15).
The high-flying Briya Wilborn was held to four points. Ashley Yateman also tallied four. Marissa Nix added three and Mystri Jodie had two.
Leading scorer Kyra Navarrete sat out the game with an injury.
“I thought we would need to score 80 points to win and we got that,” said Logan head coach Marty Hawkins. “I told Amanda (Vols’ assistant coach Buldtman-Shelby) what we really needed today was for Jessica and Aneta to come through for us offensively and pick up Kyra’s points and they did just that and then some.”

Hawkins said that is encouraging news with only one regular season game remaining before the start of the Region 24 tournament.
“We’ve won a couple big games in a row now,” he said. “We’re still a young, inexperienced team, but hopefully, we’ve learned a lot from this season. There were times today when we had five freshmen on the floor at one time.”
The Vols wrap up regular-season play Saturday at home against Lake Land College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
