CARTERVILLE - The Student Success Center at John A. Logan College kicked off the spring semester with an open house Thursday to provide information to students on the services it offers, including the TRiO Program (a federally funded grant through the U.S. Department of Education), Disability Support Services, and a campus tutoring program.

Carolyn Gallegly became the director of the Student Success Center in November and hosted her first open house.

“This event is a great way to highlight our programs and services and allow the students to meet the staff here,” Gallegly said. “The people in our department are all professional and also very open and warm. That’s one of the first things I noticed as a new employee here. Everyone is warm and friendly, and the students will find the Student Success Center to be an extremely welcoming place to get assistance with any needs that they have under these programs.”

Gallegly was pleased with the turnout at the open house.

“We had many students come by and some instructors brought their entire classes in,” she said. “I enjoyed meeting the students and some faculty members that I didn’t know. We invite people to come by anytime to learn more about the resources we can provide.”

Ngozi Okasili, an evening academic advisor at JALC, stopped by the open house.

“I was involved in the TRiO Program when I was a college student,” Okasili said. “It’s not only an important program at Logan, but it’s important to higher education as a whole. It allows students who have no background or guidance in going to college to get personal assistance to help them be successful. I feel like I benefitted from the services TRiO provides, and I always encourage my students to check out the program.”

In addition to its three main programs, the Student Success Center also conducts educational workshops throughout the year that are free of charge and open to all Logan students. For more information, call 618-985-2828 or 618-457-7676, Ext. 8289.
