VINCENNES, IND. - The John A. Logan College volleyball squad fell back to the .500 mark this fall at 5-5 overall following a 1-3 performance at the Vincennes University Invitational Tournament this weekend.
The Volunteers dropped two matches on Friday, first to Lincoln Land (15-25, 20-25, 19-25), and then to Vincennes (27-29, 25-23, 15-25, 26-24, 10-15). Logan bounced back to win its first match in consolation bracket play Saturday, a three-set win over Goshen College (25-19, 25-16, 27-25), before dropping a heart-breaker to Indiana Tech (25-14, 24-26, 25-12, 21-25, 13-15).
“We just didn’t play very well,” said a dejected Vols head coach, Bill Burnside. “Our ball control wasn’t good enough and we didn’t hit the ball very well. Everybody just seemed to be out of sync some. We played better the previous weekend at South Suburban.”
Leading Logan in kills at the Vincennes tourney was freshman middle hitter Alyssa Sturgeon (Murphysboro) with 24. She added 16 blocks, which also led the team. Sophomore outside hitter M.J. Brown followed with 23 kills at the tourney. Tops in digs defensively was freshman Morgan Mueller with 105. Brown followed with 84 and also led the team in serves with six aces.
Freshman Kacey Wahlig was tops in assists from her setter’s position with 86.
Logan returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rend Lake College in a Great Rivers Athletic Conference match.
