The John A. Logan College women’s golf team competed at a three-team fall invitational tournament Friday in Centralia hosted by Kaskaskia College and placed second overall to Rend Lake.

The Volunteers finished at 379 in rain-soaked conditions at Greenview Golf Course, some 30 strokes off the pace set by the Warriors at 349. Kaskaskia was third. No team score was available.

Top individual performer for the Volunteers was sophomore Alexis Gatton of Edwardsville, who checked in with an 88 (45 on the front nine and 43 on the back). Gatton was the Region 24 champion last spring as a freshman. Right behind her was freshman Alexis Bailey of Woodlawn with a 91 (43, 48).

Freshman Kelsey Cicardi of Pinckneyville was third on the team at 97 (48, 49) and freshman Katie Taylor of Trico followed with a 99 (52, 47).

Medalist on the day was Rend Lake’s Keeghan May with an 84.

Vols head coach Bill Glenn said that considering the conditions, he was pleased with the team’s effort.

“You’d like to think you can always do better, but I thought we did OK for a first time out,” he said. “And it wasn’t just the weather the girls had contend with, but the first college tournament for three of our four players. For those reasons, I was pleased with the results. I think you’ll see these scores come down quite a bit as the fall season progresses.”
