Logan Spikers Win Season Opener

The John A. Logan College volleyball team got the new season off on the right foot Wednesday with a three-set victory (25-17, 25-14, 25-12) over the McKendree University junior varsity squad.

The Volunteers were led by sophomore setter Krystin Wahlig, who recorded a game-high 27 assists and 11 digs. Fellow soph, Kylee Inman, and freshman Michelle Lazorchak (Marion) led the team in kills with nine each. Sophomore Jenny Manis (Murphysboro) recorded 11 digs on defense.

Vols head coach Bill Burnside said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“To be the first match of the year, I would say it was a good start,” he said. “We can play a lot more efficiently, but considering how many new faces we had in the mix, I thought we did fine.”

Burnside said he was particularly pleased with the hitting and blocking of middle hitters Inman and Lazorchak.

Logan will play four matches this weekend in the Lincoln Land Invitational at Springfield. The Vols open with a 3:30 p.m. contest Friday against Lake Land and follow up with three games on Saturday against Joliet, Shawnee and Mineral Area.
