Make it eight freshmen and eight sophomores hitting the practice field in a couple weeks for the defending Region 24 champion, John A. Logan College softball team.

The Vols completed their recruiting for the upcoming fall season with Thursday’s signing of Marion High School graduate, Holly Schuetz.

Schuetz, an infielder, joins fellow freshmen: Megan Atchison-Chester, Reena Ruggles-Nashville, DaCota Knop-Cobden, Jacqueline Youngman-Mulberry Grove, Courtney Cislaghi-Herrin, DJ Davis-Pope County and Jessi Davis-Pope County. Also signed in the off season was Kelsie Bond, a Crab Orchard native, who transferred to JALC from Southeastern Illinois College. She will be a sophomore this fall.

Vols assistant head coach Angie Jilek said the signing of Schuetz gives the Vols added depth.

“Holly possesses speed and that’s what we lacked last year,” Jilek said. “We’re hoping that she will help us out in that area for sure. She’s also a good fielder (played shortstop and third base primarily for the Wildcats) and will try to improve on her hitting. If she can do that, she can be a good player for us.”

Jilek added that Schuetz should be able to make the transition from prep to collegiate-level softball.

“I think she will be fine. The more positions she can play for us, the more advantageous it will be for her to get playing time.”

Schuetz said she is excited about playing for a Vols team that made its first-ever trip to nationals last May. Her Wildcats team enjoyed some success, too, winning the regional tournament before losing to a strong Mattoon team.

“Coming to Logan is an opportunity to expand my softball career, and hopefully, become a better player,” she said. “All I want to do is help the team out the best that I can.”

Schuetz said she plans to earn a degree in physical therapy.
