Logan’s Stanley Signs with Slippery Rock

JALC graduated sophomore Sherita Stanley yanks down a rebound in game action with Lake Land College last season. The Louisiana native recently signed a letter of intent to play ball on scholarship for Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania this fall. Slippery Rock is a Division II school.
Statistically speaking, Stanley didn’t have a big season with the Vols at six points and five rebounds per game, but statistics didn’t tell the whole story.
The Louisiana product overcame a serious injury to her right knee as a freshman to lend stablility to an inconsistent performing Volunteers squad last winter.
And as the season wore on, Stanley grew stronger and there were times when she was an absolute beast under the boards.
The soft-spoken small forward also showed an ability to hit a few shots from behind the arc (eight 3-pointers) and was never afraid to take a big shot with the game hanging in the balance.
At 5-foot-9, Stanley doesn’t project to play in the post next season for Slippery Rock. She does, however, project to be a solid team player, who can help her fellow guards handle the ball and mix it up with taller players in the paint, if necessary.
“I really liked what I saw of their basketball program when visiting the campus. Coach (Tonya) Bauer) said she will run a fast-paced, yet disciplined game. And I like that a lot,” Stanley said. “I have been in the gym a lot this summer and have gotten stronger. My knee is not quite 100 percent, but I’d say it’s somewhere close to 90 percent.”
Stanley said she doesn’t feel like she has anything to prove as a player. She just wants the opportunity to play and believes she will get that opportunity this season.
“I’m ready to get down to business,” she said.
Stanley has plans to become a physical education instructor upon graduating.
Logan head coach Marty Hawkins said Stanley is a remarkable story in resilience and perseverance.
“Sherita is the picture of determination and one of the most positive people I have ever met,” he said. “She still has a lot of basketball left in her and is a great team leader. You can’t teach the determination that Sherita has.”
