Logan Women Golfers Move Up a Slot at Nationals
The John A. Logan College women’s golf team moved from ninth overall to eighth Wednesday following a round of 339 for a two-day total of 688.
The Volunteers are nine strokes back of seventh-place Seminole State, Fla. and 20 strokes behind fifth-place Texarkana and surging Rend Lake College at 668.
“The girls had a much better effort today,” said Logan head coach Bill Glenn. “We’re still not where we need to be, but the nerves are finally gone and we’re settling in.”
Because of Monday’s rain, the tournament was shortened from four days to three. Today represents the final day of the 54-hole meet.
Top individual performer for the Vols Wednesday was Lindsay Kellerman, the sophomore from Pinckneyville. She fired an 81, four strokes better than her 85 from Tuesday. Mallory Gentry and Jenny Bernhardt each carded an 85, while Kasey McCammack was three strokes further back at 88. Talia Campbell’s score was not counted. She finished at 96.
“With the number of double bogeys we had, we easily could have shot in the 320s,” Glenn said. “Give credit to Rend Lake. They are playing extremely well. I think it says a lot for Southern Illinois to have two teams in the top 10 in the nation.”
Host Daytona State College continues to run away with the field, 43 strokes ahead of the nearest challenger.
