It wasn’t a work of art, but it was still a win for the John A. Logan College softball team Monday evening.

The Volunteers improved to 6-1 this spring with a 9-4 win over Kishwaukee College from northern Illinois in the first of 11 games to be played this week in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Logan won despite committing four errors in the field.

“We’ve got to play better defense. It was terrible all night,” said Vols head coach Bruce Jilek. “Fortunately, we got a couple of key hits early and then later in the game that led to us scoring some runs. We also took some called third strikes with runners on base. We can’t stand and take third strikes.”

Winning pitcher for Logan was sophomore righthander Chelsea Wallace. She went the distance, allowing four runs (two earned) in seven innings on three hits. She recorded nine strikeouts and walked three. Wallace, who is the team’s ace, improves to 3-0 on the spring.

Offensively, sophomore outfielder Lara Runge belted four hits, including a double and three runs batted in, to pace the team. Nicole Cheek and Ragan Dunn (double) were each 2-for-4. Hanna Brindisi was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Mandi Kellerman was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tiffany Pinnick was 1-for-4 with a double. Hailey Stephens was 1–for-4 and Celci Mueller went 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

Trailing 1-0, the Vols rolled for for runs in the second inning highlighted by Brindisi’s two-RBI single. Runge then singled in Brandisi and Dunn.

The Vols built onto their 5-3 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh. Runge doubled in Cheek. Mueller singled in Stephens and Runge and Kellerman doubled in Mueller.

Logan is set to play four games Tuesday.
