JALC freshman Filip Timmerman shot a six-under-par 66 and currently leads the field after day one of the Rome News-Tribune Invitational.

Freshman Filip Timmerman fired a six-under-par 66 Monday to give the John A. Logan College men’s golf team a two-stroke lead over Shorter College of Georgia in the two-day 17-team Rome News-Tribune Invitational in Berry, Ga.

The Volunteers had a combined 18-hole team score of 286 and is the only junior college competing in a field made up of four-year schools. Timmerman’s score is also tops among individual performers.

“Considering we’ve only played three rounds of golf outside due to the cold weather, I’d say we did fairly well today,” said Logan head coach Tom Ferris. “Hopefully, we can build on this effort and play even better Tuesday.”

Sophomore Marcelo Rozo checked in with a 70, tying him for third best score of the day Monday. Jamie Stocks (Trico High School) earned a 74. Joe Goelzhauser finished at 75. Matt Smith reported in with a 76 and Adam Butler added a 78.

Logan is the defending national champion among Division II junior colleges.
