Baseball Vols Split Pair with Southeastern Iowa

Vols’ sophomore righthander Tyler Newhart threw hard, but was not on top of his game Saturday, allowing five runs in three innings of work in a loss to Southeastern Iowa.
The futility of the second game left a sour taste in the mouth of Logan head coach Jerry Halstead.
“We did win two out of three in this series, but went 2-and-2 for the week, so overall, it was a pretty mediocre week as far as I’m concerned,” Halstead said. “We’ve got to get better, much better than this if we’re going to compete in the conference race. This team (Southeastern Iowa) is the type of team we will see in the GRAC. If we don’t have a better effort, it could be a long year for us.”
The Vols have a 10-4 overall record.
In game one, catcher Marco DiRoma led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. He advanced on a single by Derek Trovillion and eventually scored the game winner on Alexander’s base knock. Trovillion paced the attack with three hits and an RBI. DiRoma and Alexander each had two hits. Derek Mattea, Mike Kane and Ryan Richardson banged out one hit each.
Winning pitcher was Mike Guinane in relief of Erik Shannahan.
In game two, the Vols could only manage four hits off Southeastern Iowa. Chase Greenwell, Mike Kozlowski (double), Richardson and Alexander accounted for one hit apiece.
Sophomore Tyler Newhart took the loss. He is now 1-1 on the spring. The righthander allowed five earned runs in three innings of work. Jayden Pobst and Luke Shearrow finished in relief, giving up five runs between them.
