SIUC history professor Dr. Rachel Ensor addresses a gathering concerning 20th century African American painters in the O’Neil Auditorium Monday afternoon on the campus of John A. Logan College.

Dr. Rachel Ensor, history professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, delivered a special presentation Monday afternoon on 20th century African American painters at the O’Neil Auditorium on the John A. Logan College campus.

Ensor’s speech examined the artwork of African America painters as documents containing social commentary about American life. She spoke about artists such as Romare Bearden, Betye Saar and John Michel Basquiat. She explained how their art relates to the African American experience and urban life.

Ensor, who received her doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2005, previously taught at James Madison University in Virginia and in Ghana West Africa. Her research and teaching interests focus on 20th century America and African Diaspora history. She is currently an Illinois Council for the Humanities Road Scholar.

Ensor’s presentation was sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council and organized by the John A. Logan College Art Club.
