JALC sophomore forward Jesse Perry gets fouled on the alley oop play Saturday afternoon against Rend Lake.

The John A. Logan College men’s basketball team jumped out to a double-digit lead early and never looked back in routing the visiting Rend Lake College Warriors Saturday afternoon, 95-49.

The Volunteers remain unbeaten in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference at 10-0 and improve to 19-4 overall with the victory. They are ranked No. 19 in the nation among Division I junior colleges. The Warriors fall to 0-10 in league play and are 5-16 overall.

Rend Lake was never in this game as the Vols unleashed a shock-and-awe attack that resulted in six double-figure scorers and a handful of showcase dunks. Sophomore transfer Andre Clark was high scorer for the first time this season with 15 points. He was 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. He added five rebounds for good measure.

Joining Clark with 10 points or more were: Lazeric Jones (5-of-6 from the field for 12 points); Russell Moore (12); Jesse Perry (4-of-6 from the field for 11); DeMario Hines (10) and Josh Anderson (10). The Vols converted 34-of-55 shot attempts or 61 percent. Rend Lake was held to 16-of-52 shooting or 30 percent.

“I thought it was a good effort by the kids today,” said Vols head coach Mark Imhoff. “We felt that if we could bring pressure to the perimeter, they would have a difficult time with our inside people because of our size advantage. And that’s what happened. We simply had them outmanned.”

Imhoff said it was a goal to double the rebounding margin. The Vols came close, outboarding the Warriors 38 to 20.

“We were fortunate enough to get a lot of guys got on the floor, while others got some rest and that could help us a lot next week as we travel to Olney (Wednesday) and Wabash Valley (Saturday),” Imhoff said.

In the early game, the Lady Warriors of Rend Lake withstood a late rush to beat the Lady Vols, 63-57 and sweep the season series. Rend Lake improves to 6-4 in the league and to 12-11 overall. Logan falls to 6-4 and 10-8.

Logan missed several easy layin opportunities and was twice whistled for jumping into the lane too quickly, negating points made at the free-throw line. It was a step backward for a team that had won three consecutive conference games.

“It was a very frustrating offensive game. We missed a ton of easy shots, particularly in the first half,” said Lady Vols head coach Marty Hawkins. “We had chance after chance to catch them and kept shooting ourselves in the foot over and over again. I thought we defended pretty well, but certainly didn’t control our defensive glass.”

The Lady Vols made good on only 22-of-62 shots from the field (35 percent) and the percentage was even worse in the first half (11-of-38 for 29 percent). Rend Lake was slightly better, knocking down 22-of-59 attempts (37 percent). Both teams turned the ball over regularly. The Lady Vols committed 25 miscues to the Warriors’ 24.
