Vols Bounce Back with Dismantling of Ernst Prep
Seven players hit for double figures Thursday afternoon as John A. Logan College bounced back from a 10-point loss at Vincennes late Wednesday night to post a 107-51 win over visiting Ernst Prep School out of South Carolina.
Freshman southpaw Nathaniel Butler erupted for a season-high 20 points off the bench in pacing the offense. The Puerto Rican native was 6-of-11 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, including a pair of 3-pointers and slam dunks. He added a team-high 10 rebounds for good measure.
“Nate needs to play,” said Volunteers head coach Mark Imhoff. “Today, he got some minutes and took advantage.”
Joining Butler in double digits were: Andre Clark (13), Russell Moore (12), Jacquel Webster (11), Jesse Perry (10), DeMario Hines (10) and Antwond Roshell (10). Hines earned his first start for the Vols as did sophomore guard Devonte Maymon (6 points).
The Vols, now 4-1 on the season, converted on 41-of-75 shot attempts and 22-of-33 free tosses. They outrebounded Ernst by the stunning count of 65 to 13.
Defensively, Logan held Ernst to 51 total points on 23 percent shooting from the field (18-of-77), a stat that brought a smile to the face of Imhoff, after his team allowed 88 points to Vincennes.
“We needed to get back on track, especially defensively,” he said. “If we want to set the bar high and compete at a level that I think we are capable of competing at, we have to play better defensively.”
The Vols play host to No. 3 ranked Three Rivers out of Poplar, Bluff, Mo. Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
