Volunteers Win Shawnee College Invitational; Ranked No. 2 in Nation

JALC sophomore Matt Smith shot a course record 8-under-par 64 in the first round of the Shawnee College Invitational at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and took medalist honors with a 5-under-par total of 139 (64-75).
Logan turned in the top five scores of the tournament. Sophomore Matt Smith fired a course record and Logan record 8-under-par 64 in the first round of the event and took medalist honors with a 5-under-par total of 139 (64-75).
Filip Timmerman placed second with a 145 (73-72), and Trico High School product Jamie Stocks was third with a 148 (74-74). Adam Butler shot a 150 for the Vols (77-73) to finish fourth, and Marcelo Rozo carded a 153 (73-80), which placed him fifth.
“Dalhousie is a good, tough golf course, and I thought we played very well the first day,” said Logan head coach Tom Ferris. “The second day was miserable with all the rain. Everyone was just trying to survive. We really had to push it to get the round finished.”
This was Logan’s final tournament of the fall season, and Ferris is pleased the team’s results.
“We had a solid fall season and have something to build on for the spring,” Ferris said. “We won five of seven tournaments we played in so we were consistent. We knew we had a lot of talent with four of our top five players back from last year. I was concerned there might be some let down early in the season, but we really didn’t do that. I still don’t think we’ve played to our capabilities. I think we can play better. As reigning national champs, we have teams coming after us now. There are some outstanding teams out there so we have to work even harder.”
