The John A. Logan College volleyball squad extended its winning streak to 12 straight matches Saturday with a hard-fought four-set win over visiting Lincoln Land College: 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23.

Freshman Krystin Wahlig (Freeburg) led the attack for Logan with 36 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Jaclyn Rodriguez (Allen Park, Mich.) turned in a team-best 23 digs from her libero position.

Freshmen Holly Schweigert (Festus, Mo.) and Kylee Inman (Valmeyer), as well as sophomore Kaylee Newcomb (Vienna) recorded 10 kills each with Schweigert adding a team-high six blocks. Sophomore Courtney Bast (Highland) was also solid, adding nine kills and 20 digs.

“We didn’t play to the level we wanted to in this match, but it still turned out to be a pretty solid win against a quality 29-8 team,” said Lady Vols first-year head coach Bill Burnside. “Certain elements of our game, particularly our ball control, were not up to our standards. However, we had a very balanced attack with three girls leading the team with 10 kills each.

“That kind of balance is encouraging,” Burnside said. “It keeps our opponents off balance and constantly guessing as to who is going to get the next attack. When they cannot key upon any one player, they are less effective as a defense.”

The Lady Vols play Wednesday at Rend Lake. It marks the conference finale for both teams. A Logan win combined with a Lake Land loss against Southwestern Illinois would give the Lady Vols a share of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference title with Lake Land. Logan has already placed first in Region 24, beating out Lake Land and Kaskaskia.

The postseason tournament will be played in Iowa next week. The site has not yet been determined.
