Freshman Holly Schweigert recorded 15 kills to lead the John A. Logan College volleyball team to a four-set win over host Rend Lake Wednesday night, 25-12, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-18.

Courtney Bast followed up with 11 kills and 20 digs, while teammate Brittany Grace added 10 kills. The Lady Vols improve to 23-8 overall and finish 6-2 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. They have now won 13 consecutive matches.

“We didn’t play our best tonight, but we never quit,” Schweigert said. “We used our middle hitters more. There is still plenty of room for improvement. There’s no doubt, though, that we have improved quite a bit since the early part of the season. We’ve worked hard in practice.”

First-year head coach Bill Burnside said he was somewhat disappointed with his team’s offensive rhythm against the Warriors.

“For some reason, our outside hitters were off their game tonight. Fortunately, we were killing them in the middle. And other aspects of our game were working well enough to give us the win. We are finding ways to score points even when we aren’t sharp.”

The Lady Vols close out the regular season Saturday afternoon at Vincennes University. Logan will play both the host school and Columbia State. The postseason or district tournament will be held Nov. 6-8 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
