Logan Golfers Second at Mississippi Tourney

Filip Timmerman shot an even par 144 (75-69) to place second overall and help lead Logan to a second place finish at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Fall Invitational.
The Volunteers also finished second as a team to Meridian, Miss., by 16 total strokes. The Vols carded a 597 (302-295) or 21 strokes over par as opposed to Meridian, which finished five over with a 581 (287-294) for the two days.
Logan sophomore Matt Smith tied for 14th overall with a 149 (76-73), and Marcelo Rozo was one stroke behind him at 150 (75-75) to tie for 17th place. Adam Butler fired a 155 (76-79) for the Vols to finish tied for 36th place, and Jamie Stocks completed the scoring for Logan with a 156 (78-78) to tie for 40th.
“It was a high-profile tournament. Most of the top JUCO teams in the country were there,” said Logan head coach Tom Ferris. “Conditions were wet, but it’s a great golf course. We didn’t play all that great, but we didn’t play horribly either. Meridian was outstanding the first day. Everybody else was fighting for second place after that first day.”
Ferris said Timmerman had a successful outing.
“I was happy with Filip’s play,” Ferris said. “His 69 on the second day was the lowest round in the tournament. Matt was also solid and so was Marcelo. This tournament had a really strong field, and playing in events like these is what prepares us for competing at nationals.”
The Vols will tee off in their last event of the fall season at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on October 26. The tournament is being hosted by Shawnee Community College.
